Question 1 – Sexual Addiction and Treatment (Ch 14)
What qualifies something as a sexual addiction? Describe the term paraphilia. Can you think of a behavior that you would qualify as a paraphilia that does not qualify as a sexual addiction? Do you think sexual addiction is an adequate explanation for paraphilic behavior? Is paraphilic behavior harmful? On which qualification does it escape the label of addiction? Can it be treated? If so how and what is the effectiveness of the treatment?
Question 2 – Evaluating causes and the reporting of rape (Ch 15)
Select and discuss the four causes of rape presented in the etext for your paper: victim-precipitated, psychopathology of rapists, feminist, and social disorganization. Summarize the data from the etext on the causes and report which pieces of data fit which theory or theories. In the end, which theory is most supported by data? Who are the victims; who are the offenders? You might also include the primary reasons why rape goes unreported? What needs to change in order to increase the rate of reporting? Why is increasing the rate of reporting important?
Question 3 – Types of sex work, workers’ power and well-being (Ch 16)
Select and discuss one of the kinds of sex work described in the etext. Describe how much control sex workers of this type has concerning when and where they work. How vulnerable are they to the police or are they shielded? How likely is this kind of sex worker to be assaulted by a client? What sort of factors may determine whether someone becomes one kind of sex worker or another? Describe the well-being of the kind of sex worker you are reporting on. How do things such as a sex worker’s environment and socioeconomic status contribute to (lack of) well-being? Based on your research, what would be the most effective single thing that would improve the well-being of this kind of sex worker?
Question 4 – Friendly Advice (Ch 17)
Choose one of the two scenarios to research and write your 300-word paper.
Scenario 1: Your best friend, Steve, who is 22, discloses to you a long history of premature ejaculation, which has been embarrassing and frustrating for him. He has heard about Viagra and, knowing that you are taking a human sexuality course, comes to you for advice about whether he should go to a doctor to get a prescription for it. What advice would you give him?
Scenario 2: Your little sister, Katarina, is a sophomore in college and is in the fourth month of what looks like a wonderful long-term relationship. Katarina and her boyfriend now seem to have a full sexual relationship. As a benevolent older brother/sister, you want Katarina to enjoy much sexual pleasure in this relationship. What information from this chapter would you tell Katarina about, if you hoped to ensure her sexual satisfaction and sexual pleasure?
