Competencies Addressed in this Assignment

  • Competency 4: Examine the ambiguities in public policy and its impact on women.
  • Competency 6: Communicate effectively.

Assignment Description

The restorative justice movement has been contemplated as a potential improvement on the failures of the current criminal justice system to deal with violence against women, extending resources to incarcerated females, and as a potential source of empowerment for women. Many countries have done significantly more than the United States towards integrating restorative justice into their correctional systems. In Nova Scotia, Canada, for example, women are increasingly provided opportunity for diversion programs to help them to avoid the experience of prison, which is viewed as destructive for both the women and their children.

On the Centre for Justice and Reconciliation Web site (linked in the Resources), locate a restorative strategy from a foreign country. Prepare a 3-page paper, citing a minimum of two academically verified references, describing the restorative justice strategy of the country chosen. Compare the restorative justice strategy of that foreign country with the U.S. restorative justice policy. Explain the relevance of restorative justice to the special needs of women. Describe how these needs have evolved over the last two decades. Examine how these changes may impact the future of the criminal justice system.
