bio engineered foods and crops nuclear power English Assignment
Examine two websites that make competing claims about a controversial topic such as bio-engineered foods and crops, nuclear power, or alternative medicine (you may research and write about other controversial topics, the three topics listed are just suggestions offered by the textbook). For example, compare claims about nuclear energy from the Nuclear Energy Institute (www.nei.org) with claims from the Sierra Club (www.sierraclub.org), the American Council on Science and Health (www.nrc.gov). Evaluate the way each website makes the case for the position/stance it supports and evaluate how ethically it does so. Do you find possible examples of unethical communication such as conflicts of interest, false/contradictory information, or exaggerated claims? Does the information include any logical fallacies, false information, or unethical framing? Does either website use inflammatory or controversial language? Refer to page 64 and the Checklist for Ethical Communication (page 76) as a basis for evaluating the various claims. Summarize and discuss your findings in a few paragraphs (rather than a memo, as the book suggested). When assessing how ethical your sources are, keep in mind that being biased isn’t necessarily the same thing as being unethical. Justify your claims and conclusions.
