The APGAR Score

The topic for my course project will be focused on the APGAR score that is needed in

labor and delivery for the assessment of newborns. When done accurately it allows for easier

comparison of newborns within the same hospital or different locations (Clark, Hakanson, n.d.).

It also allows other healthcare professionals to know how well the newborn tolerated birth, and

how it is adjusting being outside the womb. This assessment is performed at 1 and 5 minutes

after birth and looks at 5 different categories for scoring (APGAR, 2020). I believe educating on

the appropriate intended use of the APGAR score would be most beneficial to parents. Giving

them this information would reduce anxiety levels in new mothers when their baby is being

assessed, or if they see anything that is abnormal to know how their baby will be scored upon

birth and 5 minutes thereafter.

The goal of the project is to educate parents/expecting parents on what the APGAR

scoring means and how to interpret it accurately. It is important that parents understand the

limitations of the score (The APGAR Score, 2017). As well as certain situations or factors that

can affect the score a newborn will receive. When patients/new parents are properly educated on

what the score will mean, when it is performed, what is being scored, and how it is scored it will

lower any anxiety or nervousness concerning their new baby. As mentioned before the intended

audience for this project is new parents, expectant parents, parents who do not know what the

APGAR score actually is, even people who want to become parents someday.

The response I would expect is overall a good response from a newly educated audience.

I would like to hear that my course project did teach them something or clarified anything they

may have not understood prior to seeing my project. I would expect a response that validates the

hard work being put into researching and narrowing down the most important information for the
